Youth group in Arakan gets DOLE livelihood assistance

“Sa dahon, may naiipon,” goes the tagline coined by 34 youth beneficiaries of Katipunan Youth herbs and Spices Growers Organization, because indeed their project has gone a long way in terms of financial viability and developing the entrepreneurial skills in them.

 

The said organization received an amount of P453,750.00 in livelihood assistance from the DOLE Integrated Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (DILEEP) through Barangay Government Unit (BGU)-Katipunan, Arakan, Cotabato as the Accredited Co-Partner (ACP).

 

DOLE 12 Regional Director Sisinio Cano awarded the said grant in February 15, 2019 in which this was in the form of tools, equipment and materials such as organic fertilizers and insecticides. These will support the in growing of herbs and spices like rosemary, stevia, taragona to name a few. Also present during the release were Marjorie Latoja, Chief LEO and head of DOLE-North Cotabato Field Office, and Helma Labao, Public Employment Service Office Manager of Arakan, Cotabato.

 

“I commend this youth group in choosing a unique project, a high valued crop which aside from its medicinal value has a potential local and international market,” said RD Cano. He also thanked BGU-Katipunan for accepting the role of an ACP and the Katipunan National High School for the partnership and provision of space for the gardening of herbs and spices.

 

Further, a number of the youth beneficiaries were already holders of National Certificate (NC) II for Agri-Crop Production and their projects’ host school was declared as School-Based Eco-Tourism Destination in Arakan, Cotabato by the Sangguniang Bayan of Arakan.
