Educator from South Cotabato gains new hope thru EC benefits

“Employees’ Compensation Commission is such a blessing to us, especially to occupationally disabled workers, who thought it impossible to rise again after encountering a life-threatening incident,” said Merlyn Lapido, an elementary school teacher of Norala Central Elementary School (NCES).

As a teacher of the host school, Melyn had actively engaged as one of the facilitators and taken part in welcoming the delegates of the Provincial Boy Scouts of the Philippines Jamborette held in November 24-28, 2016 at NCES.

In November 24, 2016 while she was attending the popularity canvassing of the said event, she felt her knees weakened and leant towards a school principal who was standing right behind her. She was immediately brought to the hospital and was diagnosed to have a stroke.

She filed for Employees Compensation (EC) disability claim at GSIS-General Santos City Branch in April 2017. Upon evaluation, Melyn was granted cash benefits amounting to Php30,500.00 for EC Permanent Total Disability.

To help her recuperate faster, the ECC, through Regional Program Focal in Region 12, Jerylle Marie Blanza, endorsed Melyn at Dr. Arturo P. Pingoy Medical Center, where she was currently undergoing her physical therapy since February 2018.

In addition, Melyn also received shoulders and foot support, and arms splint as part of her rehabilitation under the Employees’ Compensation Program (ECP).

I suddenly felt alive again. I thought there is no hope for me since I no longer earn for the family and have to undergo expensive treatments,” Melyn added. “Now, I am sharing my experience with the ECC to people who were curious about the ECP.”

The ECC is a government corporation attached to the Department of Labor and Employment for policy coordination and guidance. It was created by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 626, as amended and as embodied inTitle II of Book IV of the Labor Code of the Philippines. The ECC is mandated to provide meaningful and appropriate compensation to workers and their dependents in the event of work-related contingencies such as sickness, injury, disability or death.
