DOLE 12 to conduct OSHI in quake hit establishments in SOCCSKSARGEN; assists affected workers

Koronadal City – To ensure the safety of workers and in response to the directive given by Secretary Silvestre Bello III of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), DOLE Regional Office 12 will conduct an Occupational Safety and Health Investigation in business establishments in cities and municipalities hit by series of earthquake that strucked Mindanao.

The said OSHI will be conducted by the technical inspectors of the department together with partner institutions in the region such as the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE), Integrated Institute of Electrical Engineers (IIEE), Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME), and in coordination with the Office of the Building Official (OBO) of the Local Government Units.

Initially, the department had profiled 105 workers affected by mall fire caused by earthquake in General Santos City and issued certification for them to avail unemployment insurance from the Social Security System. A job fair was conducted and sponsored by LGU-General Santos City on October 23, 2019 in which 85 applicants were hired on the spot.

DOLE-North Cotabato Field Office also profiled 387 affected workers  from 23 business establishments in the province. Further, DOLE-TUPAD fund amounting to Php 2,270,000.00 will benefit at least 718 workers from the formal sector in the municipality of Tulunan and Kidapawan City. Beneficiaries will work for 10 days with a daily rate of Php311.00, the prevailing minimum wage rate in the region.

“The department is working double time to safeguard our workers and at the same time give them assistance during these unwanted calamities,” said DOLE 12 Regional Director Sisinio Cano.

OSHI is conducted to ensure a safe and healthful workplace for all working people by affording them full protection against all hazards in their work environment. End/CDGamboa
