The Department of Labor and Employment XII – Sultan Kudarat Field Office conducted a Gift Giving Program through the DOLE Project Angel Tree at Brgy. Nati, Senator Ninoy Aquino, Sultan Kudarat on January 26, 2018 for the benefit of 50 child workers who are from families of Manobo indigenous people.

The 50 profiled beneficiaries of the Project Angel Tree are children of farmers with minimal knowledge on the perennial effect of child labor in coffee and corn farming. The nature of work of the child laborers includes bagging, selling, planting, harvesting, hauling, weeding, and other domestic jobs. Their age ranges from 8 to 15 years old and they are studying at Nati Elementary School from Grades III-VI.

The project is in collaboration with the Family Welfare Program Association in Sultan Kudarat Province, together with the Provincial Tripartite Industrial Council of Sultan Kudarat, which served as benefactors. They include companies namely: Kenram Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Multi-purpose Cooperative (KARBEMPCO), Al-Wali Manpower Corporation, C.A. Betalac Construction and General Merchandise, Tacurong Fiitmart, Inc., Sultan Kudarat Telephone System Inc. – JVL Star Cable, Kimsan Plaza Corporation, Iron Block Security Agency, Great Provider Manpower and General Services, STI College Inc., Sultan Kudarat Electric Cooperative (SUKELCO), Swana Mercantile, VMC College Inc. – Tacurong, and Coseda Security Services.

The benefactors provided food, slippers, and school supplies for the children. They also plan to continue providing assistance to the said beneficiaries to help improve their economic and social conditions.

DOLEXII-SKFO Provincial Director Arlene R. Bisnon expressed her hopes that through the project, children will be motivated to do well in school and that child labor will be eradicated. She also hopes that the child beneficiaries are in better condition the next time DOLE visits the area. She promised to monitor the progress of the child beneficiaries and aims to continue to help them in the future, together with the members of the FWP Association of Sultan Kudarat and the PTIPC-Sultan Kudarat.

Meanwhile, SNA Municipal Mayor Randy L. Ecija, Jr. extended his appreciation and gratitude to the Department for giving happiness and granting the wishes of his constituents who belong to the disadvantaged sector of the society. He also expressed his goal to continue to support the DOLE programs and services.

Nati Elementary School Principal Claribel F. Nacional thanked the Department and benefactors for choosing her pupils as beneficiaries of the project. She mentioned that the profiled child workers often skipped classes to work in order to bring food to their family’s table. She said that the project has brought smiles to the children’s faces and has given them hope that the government is present to help them break away from poverty.

“I would like to thank Mayor Ecija for the continued partnership with the DOLE, and our valued social partners for not forgetting to reach out the most vulnerable sector of the society, these children,” DOLEXII Assistant Regional Director Yahya A. Centi said in his message.
