Mary Jane B. Badayos was one of DOLE XII – South Cotabato Field Office’s (SCFO) Government Internship Program (GIP) beneficiary last 2018. She came from a poor family in Banga, South Cotabato. Her parents worked as planters and harvesters in different farms in their barangay.
Mary Jane persevered to finish her studies and to uplift their unfortunate situation. With strong motivation to finish a vocational course, she applied and was granted a full scholarship by Holy Child Academy in Surallah, South Cotabato. And to cover her expenses for fare and meals, she worked as a dishwasher in a small carinderia which she would earn seventy-five pesos (Php75) daily.
During summer vacations, she would avail the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES), and was assigned at PESO Banga. Her experience as a SPES Baby improved her skills on how to communicate to other people and molded her to become a good worker. She used her salary from SPES to pay for school miscellaneous fees that were not covered by her grant.
Despite financial difficulties, she was able to finish Associate in Computer Technology last April 2018. After her graduation, she was fortunate to be hired as GIP-Enumerator for an internship of 6 months from June to December 2018. At that time, she would go from different barangays in Banga to profile child laborers. Hearing different stories from child laborers made her realize that she wants to become a public servant.
During GIP Culmination last January 2019, Mary Jane shared her experience and struggles in life. She expressed how grateful she was to DOLE XII and she even wrote a poem about her experience as GIP beneficiary that she recited during the culmination.
Today, Mary Jane works at LGU-Banga as job order employee working as staff in Barangay Affairs Unit.
With SPES and GIP, Mary Jane was able to achieve her simple dream. Now, she helps her parents with their daily expenses and pay tuition fees and other school expenses of her four (4) younger siblings.
“I would like to thank everyone who made me smile, who made me laugh and who gave me strength to do the best,” said Badayos. End/JIlomen
