Wages of domestic workers or “Kasambahay” in Region 12 will soon be adjusted by P1,500.00 per month as soon as the Wage Order issued by the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) XII providing for the salary adjustment becomes effective.
Wage Order No. RB XII-DW-02 that was issued on January 21, 2020 raises the kasambahay’s monthly salary to P4,000.00 for cities and 1st class municipalities and P3,500.00 for other municipalities.
DOLE 12 Regional Director Sisinio Cano said that the decision to adjust domestic workers’ wages was done motu proprio by the Board considering that the last wage adjustment was made 2 years ago and that prices and the cost of living has risen since then.
RD Cano added that the last wage order was issued on December 10, 2017 which sets the monthly minimum wage at P2,500.00 for cities and 1st class municipalities and P2,000.00 for other municipalities.
Meanwhile, Board Secretary Jessie Dela Cruz said that the new wage order will take effect on February 23, 2020 or fifteen days after its publication. “The wage order will be published in a local newspaper paper on February 8, 2020,” BS Dela Cruz added.
The wage order shall apply to all domestic workers, whether stay-in or stay-out arrangements, such as but not limited to general househelp, baby-sitter (yaya), cook, gardener, laundry person, and any person who regularly performs domestic works in one household or on occupational basis.
Not covered by the wage order are service providers, family drivers, children under foster family arrangements, and any person who performs work occasionally or sporadically and not on occupational basis.
The new wage order is the second wage order issued by the Board since the effectivity of Republic Act No. 103611 otherwise known as Batas Kasambahay which was approved on January 18, 2013. The Act has instituted the policies and guidelines for the protection and welfare of domestic workers including the setting of minimum wage; and, it has delegated RTWPBs the power to review and fix the Kasambahay’s minimum wage.
