General Santos City- A total of 56 out of 344 registered Senior High School (SHS) would-be graduates were Hired on the Spot (HOTS) during the first ever Senior High School Expo and Job Fair held at SM City Trade Halls 1 and 2, this city, on March 18, 2019.
The said expo and job fair was conducted by the Department of Education-General Santos City Division in convergence with the DOLE, DTI, TESDA, PESO, PBSP and SM City Gensan.
To guide them of their choices whether to proceed to college or to find employment opportunities, the event consisted of lectures during the morning session with topics on “Employment Opportunities in General Santos City given by Sheila Marie Dumalay (DOLE) and Establishment of Small Medium Scale Enterprise shared by Edgar Soguilon (DTI).
A lecture on On-the-Job- Training Behavior was given by Socrates Fernandez (Sarangani Highlands) in order to give ideas on the right attitude a jobseeker must possess in finding job that suits them.
The Job Fair happened in the afternoon where 721 job vacancies were available from 28 private establishments. Most students however manifested that they are still very much willing to go to college for additional educational attainment.
DepEd Regional Director Allan G. Farnazo said that the event wishes to assess the effectiveness of the K-12 curriculum and to check whether these would-be graduates of the Senior High School can qualify as ready players in the world of work.
“The event also would like to evaluate the teachers’ strength and influence in implementing the curriculum. If the students failed, the teachers failed, the principals failed. But we still have to check that, and this event is one way to do it, “RD Farnazo added.
Further, DOLE12 Regional Director Sisinio B. Cano was all praised with DepEd Region 12 for initiating this job facilitation for SHS students. “This convergence program with us is really important as we could bridge employment to SHS graduates who choose to work right away,” added RD Cano.
